Tom Hanks' first marriage ended in divorce
Tom Hanks has been happily married to actress Rita Wilson since 1988, so many fans might not realize the Philadelphia star was married once before. Hanks married Samantha Lewes in 1978, and the couple had two children together: son Colin, who is also an actor, and daughter Elizabeth, bringing Hanks' total number of children to four. However, according to the New York Post, the couple separated in 1984 and then divorced in 1987, with Tom remarrying the following year.
According to People, Hanks told GQ that he quickly developed feelings for his second wife, Wilson, on the set of the 1985 film Volunteers, having previously co-starred with her in the comedy Soul Buddies in 1981. The actor opened up about the flop of his first marriage during an interview with the Fast and said, "I was looking for something I hadn't found as a kid. A broken marriage meant that I was condemning my own children to the kind of feelings that I had at their age. He was too young and insecure for marriage. I was 23 and my son Colin was already two years old when I first got married. He really wasn't ready to take on those responsibilities." As Hanks said, "My own life hasn't been as easy as my career."
