George Clooney defends Meghan Markle

The American actor George Clooney, a friend of the couple formed by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, has defended the Duchess of Sussex for the harassment of the press that she is suffering even in her seventh month of pregnancy.

Since the royal wedding, controversial information about Markle has not stopped making headlines, something that her friends have already negatively assessed because she would not be good for the health of the baby on the way.

"She (Meghan Markle) is a woman who is seven months pregnant and has been followed, vilified and persecuted in the same way as Diana, history repeats itself," Clooney appreciated in front of reporters at a photocall, according to the Australian magazine Who.

The actor believes that "we have already seen how that ends" about the fatal car accident that Princess Diana suffered in 1997 when she was chased by paparazzi in Paris, according to the aforementioned publication. For Clooney, "they are chasing Meghan Markle everywhere and she has been mistreated."

The actor has also joked about being the godfather of the son of the Dukes of Sussex, who will be born at the end of April. When asked by the media, Clooney has joked: "Oh yeah, I'll be the best man for the royal apparently." To immediately deny it and admit that he is already "the father of twins, I have enough to deal with."

This is not the first time Markle has been compared to the mother of her husband, Lady Di. The British royal house expert Melanie Bromley pointed out to the British outlet Express that the Duchess of Sussex was experiencing the same thing as Prince Charles' ex-wife: “I don't think anyone could have prepared her for this level of care. It's a gilded cage and now it has so much negative attention that there's nothing you can do about it. This is what happened to Diana."

Paul Burrell, Lady Diana's former butler, also compared Meghan to Diana in a documentary aired on Channel 5 last January. Meghan is a "strong and independent woman" and she joined the "most traditional family in the country". "Diana grew up in a house that was as big as Buckingham Palace, and even she was lost," Burrell said. Buckingham Palace is like a "minefield" for anyone new and Meghan doesn't "just settle and do what she's told" any more than Diana did.
