Taylor Swift is not a fan of the new Netflix series "Ginny & Georgia" and the singer made that abundantly clear on Monday when she criticized the show via Twitter.
The pop superstar slammed the angsty comedy after one of the lead characters in it made a joke about the singer's past boyfriends, a comment the singer-songwriter called "lazy" and "deeply."
The line was delivered by the incumbent Ginny (Antonia Gentry), a 15-year-old biracial girl who moves to New England with her 30-year-old mother, Georgia (Brianne Howey), and her younger brother.
Swift, 31, included a captioned image of the spike Ginny threw at Georgia: “What do you care? You run through men faster than Taylor Swift."
And it turns out that Swift really cares.
“Hello, Ginny & Georgia 2010 called and wants her lazy and deep joke back,” the singer-songwriter tweeted. “How about we stop demeaning working women by calling this horse FuNnY? Also, @netflix af,ter Miss Americana this outfit doesn't look cute on you Happy Women's History Month I guess."
Swift has expressed frustration with the media's obsession with her love life, particularly taking on Golden Globe Awards co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for pulling a similar prank in 2013 and writing several articles about the "public humiliation" of the fixation.
Netflix's comment on the last part of her tweet refers to the streaming titan's 2020 documentary about her, "Miss Americana."
One thing's for sure: Those who weren't aware of "Ginny & Georgia," which Netflix has ranked number one in the US, certainly have it now on their radar thanks to Swift. The 10-episode series premiered Wednesday and has been compared to "Gilmore Girls" for its jokes and cultural criticism. It has also been revised as “Acid Dipped Degrassi”.
By the way, “Degrassi: Next Class,” which is also streaming on Netflix, recently made a similar joke—“Taylor Swift made a whole career out of her ex”—which angered Swifties and set the “Respect Taylor Swift” trend on Twitter.
The campaign trended again on Monday after Swift criticized the series. Fans of Lady Gaga and Lana Del Rey also took to Twitter to criticize the series for the jokes she made about those singers as well.
