Sanders, 59, and her husband, Robert Reed Sanders, were killed in a shooting at the home of her ex-husband Robert Lindsey Duncan, in Greene County, United States.
According to authorities, Reed Sanders approached Duncan while he was in his car and began shooting at him. Cheryl, who was also armed, arrived shortly after in her own vehicle and joined the shooting.
Duncan and his wife claimed at a news conference that they were "ambushed." "They caught us off guard. They didn't say anything and started shooting at us," Duncan's current wife, Molly, told the New York Daily News.
Duncan himself said that he was returning from breakfast with his partner when Reed Sanders, wearing a mask and hood, confronted him. "What happened after that was instinct. It wasn't me. It was instinct," she said, of the shooting that followed the attack.
Duncan also denied that the motivation behind the attack was a fight over his and Cheryl's daughters' access to a college trust fund. "With two weapons? With multiple cartridges that were loaded? All the details of the investigation will come to light," he said.
