Matthew Perry, renowned for his role in "Friends," has shed light on the reasons behind his breakup with Hollywood star Julia Roberts.
The two celebrities first crossed paths before Roberts' guest appearance on the second season of "Friends" and eventually dated for six months, parting ways in April 1996.
In Perry's forthcoming memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," he candidly discloses that he ended his relationship with the "beautiful and brilliant" Julia Roberts due to her struggles with addiction and his own feelings of inadequacy.
Their early connection in 1995 began with a flurry of faxes exchanged between Perry and Roberts, a remarkable feat given their busy schedules. While Roberts was filming "Everyone Says I Love You," Perry was immersed in the world of "Friends."
Perry reminisced about eagerly awaiting each fax, even to the point of cutting short conversations at parties to rush home and check for new messages. He vividly described Roberts' messages as exceptionally intelligent, and her words made him feel as though she was "put on this planet to make the world smile."
Their exchange soon evolved into a romantic connection, culminating in Roberts sharing her phone number with Perry. Their first phone call together extended beyond five hours, marking the beginning of an intense connection.
Perry recounted, "After that, they couldn't stop us: five-hour conversations here, four-hour conversations there. We were feeling something; I wasn't sure what, but we were feeling something."
The couple eventually met in person, and by New Year's Eve of 1995, they were officially a couple. However, their relationship came to an end in April 1996, with Perry acknowledging that dating Julia Roberts had been overwhelming for him. He admitted that he constantly feared she would break up with him, so instead of facing the inevitable pain of losing her, he decided to end the relationship.
In another revelation from his memoir, Perry disclosed that he had asked out his "Friends" co-star, Jennifer Aniston, years before they both landed roles in the iconic sitcom.
