Mimi Rogers, Tom Cruise's forgotten first wife who introduced him to Scientology

The star of the Mission Impossible franchise was married for the first time to Mimi Rogers, an American actress who rose to fame on television for the series Women of Paper (1984) and in film with The Shadow of the Witness (1987), directed by Ridley Scott.

Mimi Rogers, Tom Cruise's forgotten first wife who introduced him to Scientology

Mimi's childhood was marked by her father's religious beliefs, as he was an active member of Scientology, which the actress joined during her adolescence. One of the most striking traits of her personality is her high IQ which allowed her to skip several courses in high school, which led to her classmates picking on her for being gifted. Tired of continuing to endure insults, she decided not to go to university and chose to collaborate in different NGOs that took care of drug addicts and people with disabilities. She was married from 1976 to 1980 to Jim Rogers, another member of Scientology from whom she took her last name.

That failure in love motivated her to move to California to be an actress. At the beginning she shared an apartment with Kirstie Alley - who died last year from colon cancer - and little by little she began to appear in some of the best-known series of the moment. Her fame came with Paper Dolls. In 1985 she met Tom Cruise at a party, who was preparing for the role that would mark him for life, Top Gun (1986). After the premiere, the young performer became an idol who made Rayban sunglasses fashionable. That same year, Mimi introduced her boyfriend to the church of Scientology.

They married in 1987. At first, the press picked on them because of the age difference, since she is almost eight years older than him. Paradoxically, the godfather of the wedding was Emilio Estévez, Cruise's friend and Rogers' ex-boyfriend. At the end of 1989 the marriage broke up, divorcing the following year. For a long time there were rumors about the American performer's alleged homos- and certain statements by her ex to different media helped light the flame.

In a Playboy interview she commented that "Tom was seriously thinking about becoming a monk and believed that marriage did not fit his spiritual need. He believed he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument." Whether or not they consummated the marriage is a question that remains up in the air, but the truth is that when Cruise began filming Days of Thunder (1990) he fell in love with his co-star, Nicole Kidman, whom he married a few months later. They both adopted two children, Isabella (31) and Connor (28), who they have recently seen walking with her father and aunt through the streets of New York after countless gossip that claimed that there was no relationship between them.

During the filming of Deadly Seduction (1991) Rogers met producer Chris Ciaffa, with whom she had two children, Lucy (29) and Charlie (22). The couple married in 2003 at the Beverly Hills courthouse. They are still together.

Mimi's fame faded while Tom's grew like wildfire. However, he has not stopped working. In the last decade she has acted in such well-known series as Two and a Half Men, Mad Men or How to Get Away with a Murderer.
