Jim Parson confessed that he would have liked to see what “The Big Bang Theory” would be like without Sheldon Cooper.
Despite 12 successful seasons, “The Big Bang Theory” ended in 2019 because Jim Parsons, who played Sheldon Cooper, made the decision to leave the CBS sitcom. Although the rest of the cast was willing to continue with the program, the producers determined that it was best to end the series with the full cast.
Three years after the emotional ending of the fiction that has 279 episodes, the 29-year-old American actor and producer confessed that he would have liked to see what the sitcom would look like without his character.
In an interview with Yahoo!, Jim Parsons said he “feels good” about how he navigated his decision to leave “The Big Bang Theory.” “It's never nice to hear that you've done something that accidentally made someone angry or feel bad. But I was doing what I had to do, and that was the best way to handle it. To be honest, we weren't the kind of group that felt like we needed to have a group meeting like that.”
He also clarified that at the time he had no idea that his decision would result in the end of the show. “I can't say I was surprised, but I wouldn't have been surprised if it had continued. There was a part of me that had a feeling of delight that he could carry on without me! But that’s not what happened,” he explained.
The main cast of “The Big Bang Theory” was made up of Johnny Galecki (Leonard Hofstadter), Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper), Kaley Cuoco (Penny), Simon Helberg (Howard Wolowitz), and Kunal Nayyar (Raj Koothrappali) and when the series premiered in 2007, they all had practically the same level of relevance.
However, as Screen Rant pointed out, as it progressed and Sheldon became the most prominent character and most situations revolved around it, it became a big problem towards the end of the fiction.
Although the show tried to remedy it, it was too late, making it nearly impossible for “The Big Bang Theory” to continue without Sheldon Cooper. First, his departure should be convincingly explained. How would you have explained that someone who hates change decides to leave Pasadena and start a new one somewhere else?
In addition, Sheldon's retirement would lead to the departure of Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik), which would leave the CBS sitcom with only five main characters and without the dynamic of the group of friends: Amy, Penny and Bernadette Rostenkowski (Melissa Rauch).
“Young Sheldon”, the only spin-off of “The Big Bang Theory”, is another example of how relevant Sheldon was to the situation comedy and that without him the series would not have made sense.
