The time the 'What Happened Yesterday' actor adopted a homeless grandmother

Actor Zach Galifianakis, protagonist of the film trilogy 'What Happened Yesterday' performed a noble act by adopting a homeless elderly woman.

Although the event occurred in 2009, the actor's story was revived on the Internet because it was known that the woman died at the age of 96.

Zach Galifianakis is one of the craziest protagonists of the films 'What Happened Yesterday?' Contrary to the irreverence of the character in the film, Galifianakis in his private life is a selfless person who helped an 80-year-old woman who lived in the streets of California.

According to the actor's own words, he met Mimi Heist at a laundromat in Santa Monica. Heist was a woman who lived on the streets of Los Angeles. After divorcing and becoming unemployed and without the support of her children, she began living on the streets at the age of 55.

One fine day, the woman arrived at the laundry room where she asked the manager if she could spend the night to protect herself from the cold. The next morning the owner of the business allowed her to sleep there for as long as she wanted.

For 20 years Mimi lived in the laundry room and there she helped people wash and fold their clothes. At that time, Zach, before being famous, became a frequent customer of the laundry and Mimi also helped him with her clothes.

“Mimi changed my life since I met her,” said the actor.

Years later, when Galifianakis achieved his dream of fame, he stopped frequenting the place and lost contact with the woman. Some time later he returned to look for her but found out that the woman had returned to live on the streets.

The actor began looking for her and one day in 2009 he found her and without thinking he offered to rent an apartment. It is known that the interpreter's friend, actress Renée Zellweger, star of the film 'Bridget Jones's Diary', helped Mimi furnish her new home.

After 'adopting' Mimi, Zach gave her $50,000 every Christmas and paid all of her expenses. The woman's story remained a secret until the day of the premiere and red carpet of the film 'What Happened Yesterday 3', since the woman was the actor's companion.

Such was the buzz about her that filmmaker Yaniv Rokah made a documentary about her in 2015 called 'Queen Mimi'. Sadly, Mimi died in 2021 at the age of 96.
