They are one of the most successful couples on Bollywood screens. But did they really have an affair?
Since 1993, when they starred in their first film “Baazigar”, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol have become one of the golden couples of the Bollywood industry, and each new production they star in together becomes a hit in the cinema.
This chemistry on and off screen is undeniable. On social media, there are many followers who maintain that Shahrukh Khan married Gauri Khan, because he was her teenage love. But, Kajol is his true love.
Like many love stories, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol got off to a bad start when they met in 1993.
“When he was working with her in Baazigar, [director] Aamir Khan asked me about Kajol because he wanted to work with her. I left him a message that said: “She's very bad, without focus, you won't be able to work with her,” however, he later regretted what he said and called the director again to say: “'I don't know what it is, but she is magical on the screen,” the actor told Indian Express in an interview.
A year earlier, in 1992, Kajol had met actor Ajay Devgn and had begun a discreet relationship with him. When the news broke, the Bollywood industry was taken aback because their personalities were very contrasting. She is talkative, happy and lively, while he always seems reserved.
Shortly after, Kajol starred alongside Shahrukh Khan in “Baazigar,” her first box office hit. From there came “Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge”, and the audience ended up falling in love with them. So much so, that the film continues to be shown uninterruptedly for more than 20 years.
The chemistry that Shahrukh Khan and Kajol exuded raised all kinds of comments, which were encouraged by the affectionate way in which they behaved during the award ceremonies and parties that were organized.
For Ajay Devgn, the situation was not comfortable. The press was enthralled with the chemistry between Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, even calling them “SRKAJOL”, while he, his real partner, felt marginalized personally and professionally.
The relationship between Ajay Devgn and Kajol reached a critical state and he put a condition on it to continue: She could not work with SRK anymore.
The actress fell in love with her as she accepted and rejected several films that requested her as Shahrukh Khan's partner. Three years later, in 1998, and after the insistence of director Karan Johar, Bollywood's favorite couple, she returned to star in a new box office hit “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.”
Her relationship with Ajay Devgn once again became strained, and Kajol resolved it by marrying him on February 24, 1999. Despite being invited, SRK did not attend.
From then on “SRKajol” have worked together on different projects including the sequel to “DDLJ”, called Dilwale, which also marked a new success. And although SRK said at one point that he felt the affection of a sister for Kajol, in 2015, he admitted that sometimes there was something more.
“There are scenes in Dilwale that wouldn’t have worked if there wasn’t a ‘Kajol and Shah Rukh together’ story.”
For her part, Kajol also hinted that her friendship with SRK goes far beyond the superficial and therein lies the secret of their chemistry.
“We have both grown, evolved and changed as human beings. We've become more comfortable with each other and it's much easier to work with someone you've known for so long. “There is a certain history and comfort when someone has seen you at your worst and is still okay with it and treats you normally.”
