In a historic moment at the 2024 Emmy Awards held at the Peacock Theater in California on January 15, Elton John secured his place among the prestigious EGOT celebrities by winning the award for Best Variety Special.
The recognition was for his documentary 'Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium,' a streaming feature on Disney+ capturing the farewell concert of the 76-year-old music icon in the United States.
Known as the 'Rocket Man,' Elton John's victory at the Emmy Awards added to his earlier triumphs, including the Super Bowl halftime show with Rihanna, Chris Rock's Netflix special, and hosting the 2023 Oscar and Tony broadcasts.
Joining the exclusive EGOT club, he now holds the four major awards in the entertainment industry: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
President Joe Biden, acknowledging Elton John's remarkable achievement, expressed his admiration in an emotional message. In a post featuring a photo of the president alongside the musician, Biden praised Elton John's contributions, stating, "Sir Elton John has been a tidal wave throughout his career to help people rise up and make hope and history rhyme.
Six Grammy Awards. Two Oscars. A Tony. And now, an Emmy. Congratulations, Elton, a singer and songwriter of our time, for all times."
This is not the first time President Biden has recognized Elton John's contributions. In September 2022, he awarded the British composer the National Humanities Medal for his dedication to raising awareness about AIDS. The ceremony took place at The White House, where Elton John performed 'Your Song' for over 2,000 invited activists.
In response to winning the Emmy, Elton John, who was absent from the event due to knee surgery, expressed his gratitude on Instagram. He thanked his entire team, acknowledging the collective effort and creativity that contributed to the success. Elton John's caption reflected his joy: "We won an Emmy and I'm on cloud nine! Receiving this recognition is a testament to the passion and dedication of everyone involved, and I am deeply grateful."
