Prince Harry and Meghan Markle found themselves in less-than-stellar seats at the premiere of "Bob Marley One Love" in Jamaica this week, raising eyebrows and prompting some to dub it "life on the D list."
In a newly surfaced video, the royal couple, known for their glamorous appearances, appeared taken aback as ushers directed them to seats several rows from the front, contrary to the expected VIP treatment. The footage showed Harry looking visibly confused, while Meghan, in an elegant black gown, had to adapt to a tight-fitting spot, sparking mockery and commentary on their seemingly subpar seating arrangements.
Despite the unconventional seating, the Sussexes mingled with other notable figures on the red carpet, posing with politicians like Marlene Malaho Forte, Brian Robbins (President and CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon), and Jamaica's Prime Minister, Andrew Holness. The couple's interactions, however, stirred controversy, especially given Holness's stance as an anti-monarchist and his advocacy for Jamaica's separation from the United Kingdom.
Critics and online commentators didn't hold back, with one pundit sarcastically remarking, "OMG overdressed and sitting in cheap seats—where was Jamaican PM sitting?" Another suggested that they should have opted for a more casual attire, saying, "Dressed to the nines but made to sit among the regular folks—should have worn a button-down and jeans." Some even pointed out concerns about the cleanliness of the venue, with one viewer stating, "Never mind the seats; the floor looks very dirty. I would not look impressed by that either."
The move was deemed insensitive, particularly considering the health challenges faced by King Charles and Princess Kate. King Charles, 75, recently underwent treatment for an enlarged prostate, while Kate, 42, was hospitalized for abdominal surgery. Holness, 51, has been a vocal advocate for Jamaica's independence from the United Kingdom, adding another layer of controversy to the Sussexes' attendance at the event.
Royal expert Phil Dampier suggested that Harry and Meghan's ubiquitous presence at various events may be losing its impact, noting, "It seems Harry and Meghan will turn up at the opening of an envelope these days." The incident has ignited discussions about the couple's choices and public appearances in the context of their royal affiliations and ongoing controversies.
