Hillary Clinton is facing criticism for her awkward response to the 2024 Oscars snub of Barbie star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig.
Despite the disappointment, Clinton, 76, took to Instagram to offer words of encouragement, stating that while it might sting not to take home the gold, the millions of fans love them, emphasizing they are more than just "kenag." The former Secretary of State referred to the film's Oscar-nominated song, "I'm Just Can."
The Instagram post sparked a diverse range of comments, with some expressing agreement with Clinton's sentiments. However, others were less thrilled, and political commentator Tommy Lren commented, "Stop the war in Gaza instead of playing with Barbie. Are you for real?" Another commenter wrote, "She doesn't care about pregnant women crushed to death in Gaza but is heard about Elite Hollywood nonsense."
Clinton's comments came a day after both Robbie, 33, and Gerwig, 40, failed to secure nominations for best actress and best director in the 96th annual Academy Awards, despite the film receiving eight nominations. Several cast members expressed their disappointment, with America Ferrera stating her disappointment at Gerwig's absence on the list and praising Robbie's incredible achievements as an actress.
Ryan Gosling, Robbie's co-star, issued a strong statement condemning The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, expressing honor and pride for being nominated alongside such remarkable artists. He emphasized that there is no Ken without Barbie and no Barbie movie without Gerwig and Robbie, calling them the two people most responsible for the film's global success. Gosling expressed deep disappointment at their exclusion and highlighted their talent, grit, and genius.
As of now, neither Robbie nor Gerwig has commented on the Oscars snub. The awards ceremony will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood and broadcast live on ABC on March 10th. The controversy surrounding the snub adds another layer of complexity to the Oscars and the recognition of outstanding contributions to the film industry.
