Taylor Swift has made a plea to her fans, asking them not to attack her ex, John Mayer, particularly in connection with one of her most famous songs, 'Dear John,' which was inspired by their past relationship.
Despite the breakup and the emotions expressed in the song, Swift emphasized the need to move beyond negativity during Mayer's upcoming uncomfortable moments surrounding the release of his album Speak Now on July 7.
In the lyrics of 'Dear John,' Swift questions, "Don't you think nineteen was too young for you to play your dark and twisted games with me when I loved you so much?" Yet, acknowledging that John has already faced consequences known only to them, Swift made a compassionate request to her fans during a recent concert at the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
While standing on stage, Swift expressed her desire for kindness and gentleness to be extended online, especially as the release of her new album approaches. She urged fans to refrain from perpetuating negativity on the internet, stating, "I was hoping to ask you that, as we get closer to the release of this album, I would love for that kindness and gentleness to be extended to our activities on the Internet. Don't you think?" before performing 'Dear John.'
Swift's ongoing efforts to reclaim the rights to her first six albums, previously sold to Scooter Braun, are part of her plan to regain control over her music.
In contrast to the emotions conveyed in 'Dear John,' Swift holds no grudge against her ex. However, she wishes to prevent her fans from reliving those stories to the detriment of others. Although Mayer publicly acknowledged feeling blindsided and humiliated by the song's release in 2012, Swift's call for kindness reflects a desire to move beyond past grievances.
