Meghan Must Pay Spotify $20M For Breaking The Exclusivity Agreement

Meghan Markle's podcast, "Archetypes," returns with a fresh appearance and a new home.

Meghan Must Pay Spotify $20M For Breaking The Exclusivity Agreement

Lemonada, a prominent media company and podcast network, shared the exciting news via its official channels, announcing the show's relaunch. Previously hosted on Spotify with 12 episodes in 2022, the podcast underwent subtle rebranding, sporting vibrant pink hues in Meghan's artwork and incorporating the Lemonada logo.

Megan's partnership with Lemonada, unveiled on February 13th, marks a new chapter for "Archetypes," which remains true to its mission of investigating, dissecting, and challenging the labels that hinder women's progress.

The initial 13 episodes of "Archetypes," spanning from August to November 2022, are now available for streaming on all platforms. Season one featured esteemed guests such as Serena Williams, Mariah KY, and Paris Hilton, each exploring prevalent stereotypes that constrain women.

With the transition to Lemonada, Meghan anticipates a surge in listenership, dismissing any notion that the platform shift diminishes the podcast's value. Despite the exclusivity agreement with Spotify, Meghan has secured rights to stream "Archetypes" on alternative platforms.

However, the journey of "Archetypes" has not been without its challenges. Following the conclusion of her lucrative deal with Spotify in 2023, Meghan and Prince Harry terminated their $20 million partnership with the streaming giant. Spotify expressed dismay over Meghan's unauthorized sale of podcast rights to other platforms, hinting at potential legal repercussions.

The decision to repurpose existing episodes on Lemonada has led some to question Meghan and Harry's productivity, with criticisms of their perceived reliance on past content rather than generating new material.

Looking ahead, the timeline for Meghan's future podcast ventures remains uncertain. Without the extensive resources and support of her previous production team, launching new projects on Lemonada may pose logistical and financial hurdles.

Megan's commitment to self-sufficiency, eschewing upfront funding and relying on personal sponsorships, underscores the challenges ahead. Despite past controversies, such as the disputed narrative of a fire incident during a South Africa tour, Meghan's storytelling continues to captivate audiences, now available for a fee on Lemonada.

In the wake of parting ways with Spotify in June 2023, Meghan and Prince Harry's production company, Archewell Audio, faces a new chapter in their podcasting journey. The transition to Lemonada signals a fresh start, albeit with uncertainties surrounding future projects and the couple's ability to navigate the podcasting landscape independently.
