The African-American Film Critics Association (AFKA) has announced its lineup of special achievement honorees for 2024, who will be feted at the organization's 7th Annual AFA Special Achievement Award Luncheon on March 3rd at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
"Killers of the Flower Moon" will be bestowed with the Stanley and Ken Crom Social Justice Award for its illuminating portrayal of the infamous Osage Nation murders. Jamie Foxx and Daari Turner, the producing team behind Foxhole Productions, will be recipients of the AFA's Producers Award for their works "The Clone Tyrone Story" and "The Burial," alongside Foxhole's steadfast dedication to promoting inclusive narratives on screen.
Renowned choreographer Fatima Robinson will be celebrated with the AFA's Salute to Excellence Award, recognizing her impactful contributions to choreography, including her recent work on "The Color Purple." The late Michael Lot will posthumously receive the inaugural Freedom Award, honoring his remarkable legacy as a marketing strategist, thought leader, and founder of "Lead with Love."
Filmmaker Dion Taylor will be honored with the Horizon Award, acknowledging his burgeoning talent as the founder of Hidden Empire Film Group, with upcoming projects including "Free Agents" and biopics on civil rights activist Congressman John Lewis and boxer Floyd Mayweather.
In a nod to their commitment to diversity and support for emerging filmmakers, Delta Airlines will be presented with the AFA's Film Advocate Award for their efforts in entertainment programming aboard Delta flights. Notably absent from the honorees list are Megan and Harry, who were initially included but later removed after their agency submitted the Netflix documentary series "Archewell" to the AFKA in 2023.
Variety reported that the AFKA's mission since its inception has been to amplify black voices in film criticism and arts and entertainment journalism, spanning the African diaspora. A source close to the organization revealed that Megan mistakenly believed herself to be a director of color and attempted to submit a film for consideration, only to discover that it consisted of static images rather than a live production. The film, titled "Harry and Megan," was swiftly eliminated in the initial selection process.
This revelation coincides with a turbulent period for Prince Harry and Megan Markle, as they face mounting scrutiny in the wake of a scathing critique from Golden Globes host Joe Koi, who quipped about the couple's lucrative deal with Netflix.
Royal commentator Lady Colin Campbell hinted at further troubles on the horizon, predicting a "bombshell" revelation that would further tarnish the couple's reputation. She suggested that Megan's status as a former actress and the turmoil she allegedly creates contributed to their unfavorable public perception.
