Netflix recently halted production on Meghan Markle's cooking series, citing allegations of plagiarism due to similarities with Paris Hilton's culinary film under the banner of Aru Productions, a production company co-founded by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
The announcement was made by the production company on April 11th. According to Deadline, both non-fiction series are still in their early stages of production. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex inked a multi-year deal with Netflix in 2020 under the Aru Productions banner, aiming to produce content that delves into thought-provoking and diverse narratives, emphasizing common humanity and celebrating community.
Among their previous releases are "Heart of Invictus," a series spotlighting the Invictus Games, and a collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Foundation titled "Live to Lead." Megan, who recently launched her American Riviera Orchard Lifestyle brand in March 2024, will serve as the creator and executive producer of the forthcoming cooking series.
This series will explore the pleasures of cooking, gardening, entertaining, and friendship. Michael Ste, director of Anthony Bourdain's "Parts Unknown," is set to direct the series. Although the release dates and titles of the projects remain undisclosed, Aru Productions has hinted at further announcements in the coming months.
It's essential to note that being in the early stages of production indicates that Megan's involvement in the project is not yet full-time. The duration required to complete the series hinges on various factors. Nevertheless, the press release serves as a means for Megan to generate interest and potentially secure a deal with Netflix.
Additionally, Megan has faced allegations of mirroring Paris Hilton's culinary series, "Cooking with Paris." Paris Hilton, also known as The Duchess of America in certain circles, previously had a cooking show on Netflix with a similar concept, featuring fancy dress, high-profile guests, and extravagant parties for premieres.
Paris Hilton has built a successful career on her unique persona, achieving financial independence through her own endeavors. Rumors suggest that Netflix suspended Megan's series after uncovering script similarities with Paris Hilton's show. However, the streaming service has reportedly given Megan time to make adjustments.
Notably, Megan lacks formal culinary training, having never attended cooking school or worked as a professional chef. If her show does make it to Netflix, it would likely involve inviting affluent individuals to showcase their cooking skills and discuss their everyday lives, focusing on themes of compassion and kindness.
Nonetheless, it remains uncertain whether Megan will be able to attract prominent guests, as she has faced criticism and has a strained relationship with some in the Hollywood industry. While Paris Hilton boasts substantial wealth, name recognition, and established connections in Hollywood, Megan's path to achieving the same level of success may be challenging.
Paris Hilton's accomplishments are attributed to her business acumen, hard work, and genuine personality. She has been financially independent for most, if not all, of her adult life, starting to earn money from club appearances at the age of 16, showcasing her charisma and entrepreneurial spirit.
