Netflix has temporarily halted production on Meghan's cooking series due to similarities with Paris Hilton's culinary film.
Archie Productions, the company co-founded by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, announced on April 11th that they are in the initial stages of developing two new non-fiction series. Deadline was the first to break this news. The royal couple signed a multi-year deal with Netflix back in 2020.
Since then, Archie Productions, committed to highlighting diverse narratives and celebrating community, has released projects like "Harry and Meghan: Heart of Invictus" and a collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Foundation called "Live to Lead." The first new show, created and executive produced by Meghan, will celebrate cooking, gardening, entertaining, and friendship. Directed by Anthony Bourdain's "Parts Unknown" director, Michael Steed, the series will draw on Meghan's newly launched American Riviera Orchard Lifestyle brand, which debuted in March 2024.
Archie Productions stated that release dates for the new series will be announced in the coming months. While the titles for these projects remain undisclosed, it's important to note that they are still in early production stages. This means Meghan is not yet working on them full-time. The duration for completion of the series is uncertain, considering it's still in early development. Despite the early stage, the press release indicates significant interest in the projects. However, some speculate that the press release aims to pressure Netflix into greenlighting the shows.
Furthermore, Meghan has faced accusations of imitating Paris Hilton's culinary series, "Cooking with Paris." Paris Hilton, often dubbed the "Duchess of America," already had a Netflix cooking show with a similar concept: extravagant settings, celebrity guests, and lavish parties for premieres. Paris's adeptness at building a career based on her persona has garnered her considerable wealth and autonomy. In contrast, Meghan's projects have been criticized for lacking originality.
Rumors suggest that Netflix suspended Meghan's series upon discovering similarities to Paris Hilton's, giving her time to amend the script. Critics question Meghan's credibility in the culinary realm, noting her lack of formal training or experience as a chef. If the show does proceed, it may feature affluent guests showcasing their cooking skills and discussing everyday life, cooking, gardening, compassion, and kindness. However, skepticism remains regarding Meghan's ability to attract high-profile guests given her controversial reputation.
Meanwhile, Paris Hilton's financial independence, name recognition, and Hollywood connections far surpass Meghan's. Paris's success stems from her business acumen, hard work, and genuine persona. Despite being a "nepo baby," Paris has demonstrated financial autonomy since her teens, earning from club appearances at just 16 years old, showcasing her charisma and entrepreneurial spirit.
