Actor Tobey Maguire
After his success as Peter Parker while still very young, the actor decided to focus on other projects. He is now associated with the superhero again.
In the early 2000s, Tobey Maguire was a prolific actor with a successful career ahead of him. His role as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man made him rise to fame, but then he disappeared over the years and the start of projects that did not go well.
Spider-Man (2002) and Spider-Man 2 (2004) were both hugely successful movies. Both movies did well at the box office and were huge hits with new and old Spider-Man fans. In 2007, Maguire reprized his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Spider-Man 3. However, despite his strong box office performance, the film was not well received by critics or fans alike.
Maguire's performance in the film lacked the authentic portrayal of Spider-Man's dark side that the role required (in that film he was facing off against Venom). Sam Raimi, the director of the Spider-Man movies starring Maguire, admitted that Spider-Man 3 was a disappointment. Raimi stated that he wanted a chance to redeem the Spider-Man movies by directing a fourth installment of the story.
However, Sony took a different direction with the Spider-Man franchise and decided to reboot the series with Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. Despite having an early and successful acting career, Maguire slowly moved away from acting in films. It appears that Maguire's departure from acting is due to several factors, including negative press and lack of interest.
Personal physical limitations strained Maguire's relationship with Sony. Maguire trained extensively to maintain his physical peak before and during the filming of the Spider-Man movies. Despite being a healthy and physically fit vegetarian, a slow-healing back injury nearly cost Maguire his role as Spider-Man as early as the second installment.
