The impressive story of the hero dog that kept a mountaineer at risk of frostbite alive for 13 hours

Grga Brkic was injured after falling 150 meters into a Croatian mountain and rescuers had difficulty finding him. “North”, an eight-month-old Alaskan malamute, saved him from death

A dog saved the life of a hiker who had fallen into a Croatian mountain ravine by lying on him to warm him for 13 hours until rescuers arrived, Croatian media reported.

Mountaineer Grga Brkic was injured last weekend after falling 150 meters along with his cousin's dog in the Velebit chain near the Adriatic coast.

Rescuers had difficulty reaching the man and animal due to snow, ice and trees uprooted by landslides.

"The friendship and love between man and dog are boundless," the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) said on Facebook. In the photo released by paramedics, the dog is seen lying on a stretcher over the victim.

"This puppy is a true miracle, sweet, pleasant," his owner told the Jutarnji List newspaper.

Three hikers accompanied by "North", an eight-month-old Alaskan malamute, had begun their descent on an icy slope at the time of the accident, which occurred near the highest peak of the massif, which is close to 1,800 meters in altitude.

“North wrapped around (the victim) and heated her up,” HGSS said. “From this example, we can all learn to take care of each other.”

Alaskan Malamutes are dogs with abundant and thick fur, famous for their resistance.
