The singer launches her most empowering anthem to date with a song and video full of references to her ex, hours after Shakira did the same
It seems to be the year of revenge or, at least, the week. Miley Cyrus launched last night her new theme Flowers by her dedicated to her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth -brother of also actor Chris Hemsworth-. Less than 24 hours ago, Shakira launched her famous collaboration with Bizarrap and now it is Cyrus who publishes her greatest "empowerment anthem" -as it has already been defined by many- worldwide and accompanied by a polished video clip.
There are many reasons that point to the little Hemsworth as the inspiration behind the new song by the American singer-songwriter. The first of the reasons, and the most obvious, is that -although the date of the album, Endless Summer Vacation, is scheduled for March 10- the release date of this single coincides with the -33- birthday of the first.
On the other hand, the letter refers to her failed relationship with an Australian, with whom she was married for just a year after almost ten years of dating. In this sense, Flowers includes a double entendre about Miley watching her marriage and the Malibu house they once shared burn to the ground, in the most literal sense - since it burned down a month before it their wedding took place. "We were right until we stopped having it, built a house and watched it burn down," Cyrus says at one point in the song.
Many also allude to the fact that the song is called Flowers and has a phrase in the chorus dedicated to this is no coincidence. Specifically, the most popular theories suggest that the singer could have composed this song inspired by the Bruno Mars song that Hemsworth once dedicated to Cyrus. This would explain why the rest of the verse continues syntactically with that of the theme When I Was Your Man, but with the relevant variation perpetrated by it: "I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand, talk to myself for hours, say things you don't understand (better than you), take myself dancing, hold my own hand, I can love myself better than you can…”
Many have already defined it as the definitive self-love anthem of the year, although it is not the first time that the one from Los Angeles -like Shakira- dedicates a song to her ex; in this case, both Mother's Daughter and Midnight Sky, both singles from her previous studio album Plastic Hearts by her. The same goes for Shakira, who in recent months has released I congratulate you (with Rauw Alejandro) or Monotonia (with Ozuna), both already with some poignant messages about Gerard Pique.
In addition, in the video, Cyrus celebrates her singleness and independence through multiple symbolisms and moments that have already been defined in the networks as iconic: from the moment she takes off her heels and starts dancing all over the house until the moment she she strength-trains after sunbathing by her pool in a La Perla outfit or walks through the Los Angeles Hills in a glitzy '92 vintage Saint Laurent. Revenge is on the line, and this is just the first sneak peek.
