The actress Paz Vega will return to the small screen in the skin of Maria Magdalena, along with Alissa Jung, who will play the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, in a miniseries co-produced by Mediaset Spain that has just finished filming in Tunisia.
Directed by the Italian Giacomo Campiotti (Doctor Zhivago), this Biblical fiction, also produced by Lux Vide and Beta film, features the Sevillian Paz Vega and the German Alissa Jung in the leading roles, who will play Las dos Marias.
Awarded the Goya for Best New Actress in 2002 for the film Lucia and S-, Paz Vega (Seville, 1981), who has extensive experience in celluloid, began her television career in the Telecinco series Más que amigos, which was followed by the fictions Companeros, 7 Vidas and Lex.
For her part, Alissa Jung (Münster, 1981) has mainly developed her acting work on television, where she has been part of the artistic cast of the series Colonia, brigade criminal, El lugar del crimen, Alerta Cobra, SOKO Leipzig and Corner und Korter, as well as the tv movies The Emperor's New Clothes and Greek ki**es, among others.
Las dos Marias also has in its cast the actors Sergio Muñiz (Los Borgia), Antonia Liskova (Shelter Me), Luca Marinelli (Lultimo Terrestrial), Roberto Citran (Hotel Rwanda), Andrea Giordana (War and Peace), Marco Foschi ( Sotto il cielo di Roma), Antonella Attili (Cinema Paradiso), Thomas Trabacchi (The World According to Barney), Johannes Brandrup (Cobra Alert) and Nikolai Kinski.
Campiotti himself and Francesco Arlanch signed the script for this miniseries in two installments based on the synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, which shows the life of Jesus from the point of view of the two women who loved him the most and which recounts episodes Biblical events such as the Annunciation of Mary, the flight into Egypt, the Adoration of the Magi, the miracle of the wedding at Cana, the beheading of the Baptist and the Passion of Christ, among others.
Unlike the Marys portrayed in film and television, such as Franco Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth or Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, the Italian director has assured that his goal is to "discover the most facet of Mary and show his path together with that of Mary Magdalene".
The birth of Jesus, beginning of the plot
While the Jews anxiously await the arrival of the Redeemer who will free them from the yoke of the Romans, Mary, a young woman from the periphery of Galilee, virginally conceives the Messiah, a son who will not be hers, entrusting herself to God, a situation that constitutes the point of start of Las dos Marias.
Joseph, for his part, a humble carpenter, decides to stay with Mary during the pregnancy, but a census ordered by César Augusto forces them to undertake a trip to Bethlehem, where Jesus is born in a manger. After hearing news of the birth of the "new king of the Jews" and fearing losing the throne, Herod decrees the death of all male children under the age of two, so Joseph and Mary flee to Egypt with their son to escape the slaughter. .
Pregnant, Maria travels to a Judean mountain town to visit her cousin Elizabeth, an elderly woman who is pregnant and who will give birth to Juan. At the same time, Mary Magdalene, a young woman from the same town as Mary, distances herself from God and enters King Herod's palace, where Herodias convinces her to lose her innocence in the arms of the monarch's son.
The styling of Las dos Marias is the responsibility of the Italian costume designer Enrica Biscossi, who has been in charge of the costume design for the well-known TV movies Sissi, Guerra y paz and Atelier Fontana.
Different enclaves in Tunisia have also hosted the recording of the miniseries, which combines both natural exteriors and on-set sequences and which has lasted a total of eight weeks.
