The actor told Chris Evans that it was not easy to assume the role of his character in the Marvel Studios movies.
A couple of years ago, before Ant-Man made his debut in Marvel Studios' cohesive universe, the character was a relatively unknown superhero to the general public. After all, while Marvel comic fans knew perfectly well who Hank Pym and Scott Lang were, they weren't very popular names to the rest of the world.
So while Marvel Studios faced a degree of skepticism in trying to nail down an Ant-Man movie, the actor chosen to play the character on the big screen, Paul Rudd, also had his challenges.
During a conversation with Chris Evans (Captain America), Paul Rudd recalled how he became the butt of jokes after landing the role of Ant-Man.
"I'd say, 'I got this part, I'm playing Ant-Man,' and then they'd say, 'Well, what does Ant-Man do?'" Rudd said. "I was saying, 'He can shrink to the size of an ant, but he retains his strength and he can also control ants and talk to ants.' And people laughed as I explained what the character does."
After Evans laughed at that explanation proving Rudd's point, the actor behind Ant-Man continued his story by explaining that people weren't just laughing at the character's features, but also mocking the fact that he would play a superhero.
“I'm not the first guy people would think of when it comes to playing a great superhero. I wanted to try to make a character, a superhero, who was a normal person," said the actor. "The whole superhero world seemed overwhelming and I was like, 'What do you do with this?' You know, to make it relatable."
But eventually, things turned out well for Rudd and so far he has played Ant-Man in several Marvel Studios movies and is already eyeing a third solo film for the character. Although of course, the actor still cannot provide many details about it.
"That's the idea," Rudd said when asked by Ant-Man 3. "I don't know what I'm supposed to say or what I'm not supposed to say, but with this quarantine, who knows?" he said before reminding Evans that Marvel Studios doesn't allow them to talk much about their plans for the future.
