The black sheep of the great filmographies of some Hollywood actors and actresses.
Movie 43
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Chris Pratt, Anna Faris, Richard Gere, Anton Yelchin, Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Bell, Halle Berry, Gerard Butler, Seth MacFarlane, Josh Duhamel, Justin Long, Chloe Grace Moretz, Liev Schreiber, Emma Stone, Jason Sudeikis, Uma Thurman, Naomi Watts, Kate Winslet. Julianne Moore
There was no shortage of Hollywood stars in this comedy, which is generally considered one of the worst movies in American movie history. And boy, can't we blame the critics for viewing it this way. Produced by Peter Farrelly (now an Oscar winner for 'Green Book'), the film shows fourteen different stories where there is no shortage of scatological jokes and S- references from the times of 'Scary Movie', 'Epic Movie', etc. It's hard to believe that so many celebrities would lend themselves to this embarrassing attempt at comedy.
Gangster Squad
Cast: Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Anthony Mackie, Michael Peña, Mireille Enos, Holt McCallany, Frank Grillo, Giovanni Ribisi, Robert Patrick, Jon Polito
Ruben Fleischer, who would later direct the also questionable (but entertaining) 'Venom', led this ambitious production that wanted to return us to the world of film noir, with gangsters and mysterious detectives, and femme fatales... But the result was anything but exciting. The plot is nowhere to be found, but the worst thing is surely having had so many great actors (including an Oscar-winning Emma Stone) and not having given them the tools to create memorable characters.
The seven magnificent
Cast: Chris Pratt, Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Haley Bennett, Peter Sarsgaard, Matt Bomer, Luke Grimes
There's no question that all of these actors (and actresses) are terrific, but this movie didn't do them any favors. Remake of the reboot ('The Magnificent Seven' by John Sturges) of the original 'The Seven Samurai' by Akira Kurosawa, this film was signed by the renowned Antoine Fuqua (director of the great 'Training Day') and full of first-class stars It fell a bit short of epic, western and interest.
The Adventures of Dr. Dolittle
Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Tom Holland, Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, Ralph Fiennes, Marion Cotillard, Michael Sheen, Selena Gomez, Kumail Nanjiani, John Cena, Antonio Banderas, Octavia Spencer, Carmen Ejogo, Jim Broadbent, Craig Robinson
How do you convince all these A-list Hollywood actors and actresses to voice animals around Robert Downey Jr in a doomed remake? Well, somehow, because that's how we see it in 'The Adventures of Dr. Dolittle', about the famous character created on paper by Hugh Lofting and popularized on the big screen first by Rex Harrison and then by Eddie Murphy. Wow, with that background, we don't even know why they tried.
Batman and Robin
Cast: George Clooney, Alicia Silverstone, Uma Thurman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chris O'Donnell, Elle Macpherson, Vivica A. Fox, Michael Gough
It is no secret that this 90s film was destroyed by critics and not even today, when we are in a time of vindicating undervalued films at the time, are we capable of defending it (well, Ricardo Rosado tries). Yes, it was a failure on different levels, practically destroying the career of Alicia Silverstone (who had shone a few years earlier in 'Clueless') and leaving George Clooney's Batman with no future options.
Hello
Cast: Emma Stone, Bill Murray, Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Danny McBride, John Krasinski
Cameron Crowe, who marked a generation with iconic films like 'A Great Love', 'Jerry Maguire' and 'Almost Famous', thought making this film was a good idea. Let's see, the cast would have a good time, filming in Hawaii with Bill Murray, but the result could not leave more to be desired, as the North American critics took care of pointing out at the time.
