Naomi Watts breaks taboos on menopause - 'Getting old is a privilege

The British actress has published a beautiful message on Instagram where she has maintained that "aging is a privilege"

The 53-year-old British actress has argued that menopause is a phase in women's lives that should be better represented in the media.

Watts noted in an Instagram post how many women experience feelings of shame as they get older, especially as they enter the menopausal phase.

“Getting older is a privilege and a time for us to be proud of our accumulated experiences,” she wrote alongside a makeup-free selfie.

The British actress claimed that having awkward conversations about topics like menopause means the problem becomes easier to deal with.

“Let's beat the stigma and address the secrecy and shame we've felt and help create a healthier foundation for future generations,” she wrote.

The actress from The Impossible confessed that when she first thought about starting a family in her thirties, the idea of menopause scared her.

"Then the M word quickly kicked my doors down, it felt like a head-on collision with a Mack truck," the actress explained.

Watts has confessed that she went through menopause before her peers and that neither her mentors nor her mother "seemed willing to talk about it." "Even the doctors had little to say. It's like an unwritten code of silence: women must put up with it and cope with the situation because past generations have done so," she denounced on social networks.

The British actress has made a public appeal for women to lose their shame when talking about menopause and help each other. According to Naomi, this is the only way to help future generations.

In addition, the actress has advanced that she is working on a project of which she feels "very proud".

At the moment there is no other option than to closely follow the publications that will be uploaded to her networks.

Does the word menopause scare you?

I do... But why? It's just a natural phase of life and something that half the population will feel directly and the other half indirectly (so please stick around...even guys!).

When she was in her late 30s, she was finally ready to start thinking about starting a family. Then the M word blew the doors off me fast, it felt like a head-on collision with a Mack truck.

How could I have realized this when no one was talking? I arrived before my companions.

My mentors and mother didn't seem willing to talk about it, I didn't know how to ask for help, and they didn't know how to provide it… even the doctors had little to say. It's strangely like an unwritten code of silence: women have to suck it up and cope because that's how past generations have.

I think it is time that women in this phase of life or in this age group are well represented. We have been underappreciated in the media, in stories, and in marketing for too long.

When uncomfortable conversations are disclosed, they become easier. It advances. Why has this particular one taken so long?

Let's conquer the stigma and address the secrecy and shame we've felt and help create a healthier foundation for future generations.

Aging is a privilege and a time to feel proud of our accumulated experiences, and to feel empowered, without apologizing. I think being part of a generation making a change is exciting. You no longer have to go through this alone.

I'm working on something I'm super proud of. I hope you'll follow me as I share more in the coming weeks.
