George Clooney said that he hopes that the treatment of his close friend, Meghan Markle, will be "kinder" now that she has become a mother and revealed whether or not she will be one of the godparents of the son of the Dukes of Sussex, born on May 6 in a London hospital.
"I think people should be a little nicer. She's a young lady who just had a baby," said Clooney, 58, who attended the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan, to his wife Amal, last May in Windsor Castle, the same place the couple chose this Wednesday to show the world Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
The Oscar winner had previously complained that Markle had been "persecuted" by the press and compared what she was experiencing to what happened to Lady Diana.
"They are chasing Meghan Markle everywhere," Clooney told reporters in Australia months ago. "She is a woman who is seven months pregnant and is being persecuted in the same way as Diana. History repeats itself," he added.
"We've seen how this ends," Clooney said, referring to Lady Di's fatal 1997 car crash in Paris when she was being chased by paparazzi.
But Clooney, who lives near the royal couple's new home in Windsor, believes that press scrutiny will "intensify" now that the dukes are parents.
The Hollywood star, who has denied that he will be the baby's godfather, joked in his interview with Entertainment Tonight about sharing a birthday with the royal baby: "I'm a little irritated because that kid is really stealing my attention."
Clooney himself is a proud father of nearly two-year-old twin girls, Emma and Alex, but says he doesn't have the wisdom to give the royal couple any parenting advice. "Do you think I should give anyone any advice?! No! What do I know? I'm old."
The Clooneys had been vacationing with the Sussexes at their home in Lake Como, Italy, and Amal Clooney also attended Markle's lavish baby shower in New York.
