The comparisons did not escape the concerns of the new duchess, who decided to be different. For that, the first step was to have a trusted wardrobe advisor
When Meghan Markle appeared on the scene, she was inevitably going to be compared to Kate Middleton in every way, particularly her fashion choices.
Middleton has been a duchess for years, she knows exactly how to dress, and her workwear is a master class in crowd-approved attire.
In contrast, the former Hollywood actress was used to walking red carpets wearing stunning, short, and sometimes very beautiful dresses.
Her transition as her monarch forced the American to ditch her bodyguard full of glitter and replace them with more sophisticated, less-revealing garments.
But instead of copying Prince William's wife, a royal says Meghan made a "conscious effort" not to imitate the Duchess of Cambridge.
Worried not to "copy Kate's style", Meghan's stylist and close friend Jessica Mulroney has taken notes of Kate's impeccable wardrobe. "She controls Kate's style as she is such a great role model," the royal expert told Elle magazine.
Markle, 37, tries to forge her own identity. So Jessica, who lives in Toronto, helps her choose outfits for royal events months in advance.
In contrast, Kate's stylist, Natasha Archer, has designers send suits to Kensington Palace, where she and her assistant plan her wardrobe.
The insider added that Kate, a mother of three, helps Meghan with her royal wardrobe: "Kate has been on hand to help guide Meghan with advice on certain designers and royal etiquette." They often wear the same designers, like Emilia Wickstead, but in very different styles.
While Kate's designers include Jenny Packham, Alexander McQueen, and Catherine Walker, Meghan prefers Givenchy, Stella McCartney, and Mackage Coats.
