Within the range of celebrities who married the same person twice, perhaps the most emblematic case is that of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Both were married when the filming of Cleopatra in Rome (in 1962) led to a passionate love story that included two marriages. His was wild, turbulent, fierce, and passionate. One of those relationships with a flame that doesn't seem to go out.
Some paparazzi photos revealed the nature of their relationship. Burton and Taylor were more than friends and soon the Hollywood press was obsessed with the couple.
By 1964 they were already divorced from their respective partners and fully committed to their new relationship.
“The wedding of the century”, as the press called it, occurred on March 15, 1964, just a few days after Liz finalized her divorce from Eddie Fisher (yes, that singer whom Taylor “stole” from the arms of her friend Debbie Reynolds).
“I crave your smell…and your round belly and the luscious softness of your inner thighs and your baby bottom and your full lips,” wrote an impassioned Richard in one of his first love letters to Elizabeth.
But if some thought that the passion between them would soon die down, it was not. Their marriage (the first) lasted until June 1974, when their personal drama was stronger than love. (It was said that the fights between the two were constant and that her tantrums and his alcoholism did not help her relationship much either).
Their breakup, however, did not last. While they held meetings to discuss financial matters, they began to see each other again with love and secretly married again in October 1975.
"You really are my husband again," Taylor wrote to Richard. "And I have news for you, there will be no more marriages or divorces."
But Liz was wrong. Her second marriage to Burton lasted less than a year. Their constant fights prevented them from living together and they separated. Their friendly relationship did stand the test of time and they were close until he died in 1984.
