'Forrest Gump' is one of the biggest hits in Tom Hanks' career, but the actor has been candid and revealed that he had serious doubts about the character and the movie.
Although 'Forrest Gump' has become one of the biggest successes in Tom Hanks' career over the years, the truth is that the actor had his reservations when it came to accepting the role and the film.
"I said to Bob (Robert Zemeckis) 'Hey, I have a question for you, is anyone going to care about this movie?'" Hanks recounts his conversation with the film's director.
"This guy sitting on a bench in these ridiculous shoes and a cuckoo suit with a suitcase full of 'Curious George' books and stuff like that. Are we doing something that anyone is going to understand?" Hanks said at the time.
Zemeckis's response was not much more reassuring, as he assured the actor that "it's a minefield, Tom. It's a F- minefield. We may be sowing the seeds of our self-destruction. Any step we take could lead to a bomb that blows up our balls".
Fortunately for everyone involved in 'Forrest Gump', things went better than good. Tom Hanks won an Oscar for Best Actor, Zemeckis for Best Director, and the film took Best Picture at the same awards ceremony. In addition, with a budget of 55 million dollars, the film has raised today more than 1,000 million dollars worldwide.
