Steven Spielberg, the famous director of 'ET', worked with Drew Barrymore when the young woman made her debut as a child actress in the fictional classic of the 80s. At that time the actress had to deal with a very difficult childhood and, now, both have revealed what their relationship was like at that time.
Drew Barrymore had a very complicated childhood and the fact is that the actress began her career when she was just a child.
She tried alcohol at the age of 11 when she began to go out to clubs and interact with great personalities in the film industry, and at only 14 years old her drug problem was so serious that she had to be admitted to a rehabilitation clinic.
Barrymore made her acting debut at just 7 years old in 'ET', the famous film by renowned director Steven Spielberg. The actress has told in an interview for Vulture that Spielberg tried to take care of her during those months in which the filming took place. He took her to amusement parks, stayed with her on some weekends, and even gave her a cat.
"She was the only person in my life to this day who has ever been a father figure," said Drew, whose late biological father, John Drew Barrymore, was an alcoholic and abusive at the time.
Spielberg has recounted: "She stayed up long past her bedtime, went to places she should only have heard of, and lived a life at a very young age that I think robbed her of her childhood." And he has confessed: "I felt very helpless because I was not her father. I could only be a kind of counselor for her."
Such was the bond between the two that while they were on set, Barrymore asked the director if he could be her father, to which Spielberg replied that he couldn't, but he could be her godfather.
Undoubtedly, Barrymore and Spielberg have become inseparable since the filming of 'ET' in 1982 and not even 41 years can break the beautiful relationship and the special affection they have for each other.
