Played by Alexandra Owens, the little girl is one of the most appreciated supporting roles in the most awarded film in Oscar history and has evolved a lot in the 26 years since the James Cameron film was released.
At dawn from Sunday to Monday, the 91st edition of the Oscars, the quintessential film awards, is held. An evening in which titles such as "The Favorite", "Rome" or "A Star Is Born", among others, will be awarded, although no feature film will achieve the figures of the true queen of these awards: "Titanic".
James Cameron's unforgettable film is one of the most recognized and recognizable titles of the last quarter of a century and one of the most successful films in the history of cinema. In fact, it is the title that has won the most Oscars, with eleven awards to its credit. The same as "Ben-Hur" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King", although it is true that neither of them had more nominations than "Titanic".
The feature film about the most famous ocean liner in history received fourteen nominations in 1998. The same as "La La Land" (2016) and "N@k-d Eve" (1950), although neither came close to Cameron's film in terms of the number of awards since both "only" took six statuettes.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, with their work in "Titanic" Rose to the Sky Hollywood, "Titanic" is based on the true story of the homonymous ship that sailed on April 12, 1912, from the southern city of Southampton (England ) on her maiden voyage to New York. She never completed her journey and sank in North Atlantic waters in the early hours of April 14-15. 1,514 people died in the sinking of one of the largest known shipwrecks in peacetime history.
Cameron's film, a true tribute to the "Ship of Dreams", has in its cast such established actors as Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, and the ill-fated Bill Paxton, but also with luxury supporting actors such as Danny Nucci, Frances Fisher, and Jason Barry. Although without a doubt, one of the most endearing characters (if not the most) of "Titanic" is little Cora Cartmell, the Third Class girl who, from the beginning of the film, establishes a strong bond with Jack Dawson (the character of DiCaprio).
The little girl is one of the first characters to appear in the film, and she shows her self-confidence from the beginning of the film. "Of course, it is that she is an ocean liner", she tells her father before boarding, when he is fascinated by the size of the "Titanic". With her innocence as her flag, the girl falls in love with Jack from the first bars of the play and manages to dance with him at that memorable party organized by the Third Class passengers. When Jack wants to dance with Rose (Winslet), the little girl stares at him with her upset face. "Calm down Cora, you're still my favorite," Jack tells her.
At that moment, nothing suggested that just 24 hours after the party, the ship would head towards its sinking at the bottom of the sea. In the tragedy (be careful, spoilers are coming) Jack would not survive, nor would Cora. The little girl is not seen to die in the film, but she is seen in one of the deleted scenes, in which she is trapped with her family trying to get on the main deck of the ship. Moments later, the girl drowned. In the last sequence of "Titanic", Cora is one of the characters who appear gathered in front of the ship's clock where Jack waits for Rose before melting into that passionate kiss for posterity.
More than two decades have passed since the film's release, so Cora is evidently not a child anymore. The actress who played the little girl, Alexandra Owens, turned 30 on November 9 and after "Titanic", she left the world of acting, to which she nevertheless returned in 2017. That year, she was part of the film terror «A closer walk with Thee» and starred in the short film «Enjoy the View». Soon, she plans to release the tape "The Sluagh."
Today, therefore, Cora is already a woman and she presents a physical appearance that has nothing to do with what she looked like in the film. So, she was only eight years old. In her Instagram profile, in which she has more than 18,000 followers, the young interpreter has given a good account that she has little to do with the girl on the tape. However, her countenance remains similar and her gaze continues to be the same that she moved and captivated the entire world when she placed herself under the command of James Cameron in "Titanic."
