The reason why Jennifer Garner was forced to film Elektra

Jennifer Garner has starred in some iconic movies that catapulted her to fame. And although the actress is very happy with the decisions she has made regarding her career, there is a film that she is not proud of and from which she could not break away.

The reason why Jennifer Garner was forced to film Elektra

Jennifer Garner was in charge of bringing to life unforgettable characters such as Jenna Rink in If I Was 30 or the CIA agent, Sydney Bristow, in the television series Alias. Since the beginning of her career in the 90s to the present, the actress has starred in all kinds of films, demonstrating all her versatility and talent.

But as with all performers, among all of her work, there are always movies that they regret or wish they hadn't starred in. Either because the film ended up being poorly received by the public or because they did not feel comfortable with the story, neither is one hundred percent proud of her trajectory. And Jennifer Garner is no exception.

The actress became the protagonist of Elektra, an action movie that worked as a sequel/spin-off to Daredevil, the film released in 2003 and starring Ben Affleck in the role of the blind superhero. Garner was also part of this film and was placed in the shoes of Elektra Natchios, the ally and love interest of Affleck's character.

The truth is that Daredevil was not very well received by critics, obtaining mixed and negative reviews. Still, Mark Steven Johnson, the film's director, and screenwriter, began work on a spin-off of the film. It was focused on the character of Elektra and Jennifer Garner was expected to reprise her role.

At first, the actress was very excited to continue telling the story of her character, since she considered herself a fan of comics and she believed that she had a lot of potentials to have an individual film. In addition, she came from having a very good experience in Daredevil, since the movie was a box office success and it was there that she met her future husband, Ben Affleck.

However, not everything in life is rosy and what had started as a promising sequel, turned into a nightmare from which Garner could not get out. Mark Steven Johnson was removed from the project and Rob Bowman took over the directing role, taking some creative liberties. In this tape, we meet Elektra, a murderer who receives the task of killing a man and her daughter, but when she takes a liking to these two, she decides to protect them and to do so, she will have to face several enemies.

At this point, the actress no longer wanted to be part of the project, but there was nothing she could do as she was contractually bound to do it. Furthermore, the filming became very exhausting for her, as they had very little shooting time and she had to undergo intense training to achieve the necessary physical transformation. The days were extremely long and exhausting due to the number of action scenes.

Michael Vartan, Alias' co-star and Garner's partner in 2003, revealed that the actress confessed to hating being a part of the film. “Jennifer called me and told me that it was horrible. She had to do it for Daredevil, she was in her contract." And the actress was right to feel bad because Elektra was a huge flop, not only at the box office but among critics, who considered the actress's performance as the only positive aspect of the film.

It should be noted that at that time, superhero movies were not what they are today, and although Elektra was a Marvel character, the study still did not gain the relevance that she has today. “It's a shame really because once Kevin Feige took control, everything went up: the writing, the directing, the comedy within the stories. I didn't have that experience," confessed Jennifer Garner.

In addition, the poor performance of the film meant a crisis in the actress's career, which cost her a lot of work to overcome. Unlike Ben Affleck, who was able to bounce back from Daredevil, Garner spent a few years stuck in roles that didn't allow her to advance, but over time, her offers began to come back and her reputation rose.
