Ethan Suplee remembered for his role as Randy in My Name is Earl, undertook a long weight loss journey thanks to his wife.
The actor Ethan Suplee has surprised me with the impressive physical transformation that he has undergone in recent years. The actor has lost more than 100 kilos and is now in great shape.
Suplee was born on May 25, 1976, in Manhattan, New York, and is currently 47 years old. His interest in acting arose at an early age. He made his professional screen debut in 1994, starring in the cult film Mallrats, directed by Kevin Smith.
He went on to play memorable roles in movies like 1998's American History X, Remember the Titans (2000), and The Butterfly Effect. At the time, Suplee was significantly overweight.
On television, Suplee gained wide recognition for his role as Randy Hickey on the hit sitcom My Name Is Earl, which ran from 2005 to 2009. However, for a significant part of his career, Suplee struggled with obesity. As he explained, this was due to the bad eating habits he had while working shooting movies or television shows.
Consequently, he often played roles that required a larger physique and took advantage of those opportunities, often through the use of prosthetics or method acting. However, at some point, Suplee began his physical transformation as he embarked on a weight loss journey.
In interviews and social media posts, the actor has been very open about his dedication to improving his health and lifestyle. Despite his fluctuating weight, Ethan Suplee's acting career has continued to thrive. He was most recently seen in the comedy Clerks III, in which he was directed again by Kevin Smith in 2022.
Some of his other major roles in recent years include appearances in the movies Dog, God is a Bullet, and Babylon.
That is not to say that everything has been easy for Suplee. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly's What to Watch podcast, Suplee explained how he lost out on job opportunities because of his new look. “At first, the casting directors didn't want him in because he had lost a lot of weight,” he recalled.
In an interview, Suplee revealed how his wife Brandy Lewis was the real inspiration for losing weight. Suplee revealed that at his lowest point, he weighed almost 250 kilos. He has already lost half that weight thanks to wanting to have a better life with his wife.
Suplee clarified that losing weight "has not made him happier." Instead, it was the progressive achievement of the goals she set for herself in his personal life that made him proud. "I just think that achieving something that I set out to achieve has given me this volume of happiness that's pretty good," he explained.
