Robbie faced speculation regarding alleged infidelity involving Will Smith and was rumored to have had a feud with Kaley Cuoco. On the other hand, Skarsgård generated buzz around a possible romance with Elliot Page, his co-star from the 2013 film, The East.

The duo collaborated on the 2016 film, The Legend of Tarzan, where their on-screen chemistry was not only evident to fans but was also palpable between the two actors. Although Skarsgård was already familiar with Robbie's work due to her role in the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street, they first met in person when he invited her over for dinner a few months before filming commenced. The instant connection between them was undeniable. Skarsgård shared, "It was uncanny.

Robbie concurred, remarking, "We hit it off right away. I immediately felt like I was talking to one of my best girlfriends." She playfully added, "Of course, he has much better abs!"

Margot Robbie's punch to Alexander Skarsgård during a scene

In the 2016 film adaptation of the classic jungle tale, with Alexander Skarsgård as Tarzan and Margot Robbie as Jane, director David Yates sought a "leading lady" who not only had chemistry with Skarsgård but could also portray a character capable of surviving in the Mongolian wilderness, as per Entertainment Weekly.

Skarsgård added, "It was very important that we didn't want it to feel archaic or dated, where it's like, tough guy has to save the poor girl." They aimed for an interpretation where "she's strong and independent," a quality Robbie effortlessly embodies. In fact, she demonstrated her physical prowess during filming, surprising Skarsgård with a punch during a scene, at Yates' suggestion.

This unexpected punch didn't occur during a fight sequence but rather amid a moment between their characters. Yates recalled, "They're doing this love scene together, and I said [to Robbie], 'Just slap Alex while you're making love, just kind of give him a punch.'" Describing it as "an earthy, sensual moment of her enjoying with Alex," the director quipped, "the only bruise he picked up during the entire shoot was probably that punch from Margot. Which says a lot about her feistiness."
