1. Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert — 21 years of marriage
The love story between Victoria and Alberto has been portrayed in fiction more than once. It is an attractive story that involves challenging the political system of the time since she agreed to get married to avoid living with her mother.
This marriage remains, to this day, the most recent wedding of an already reigning British monarch, given that all kings from then on were already married when they inherited the throne.
They both had 9 children, 42 grandchildren and 87 great-grandchildren.
2. Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III of Monaco — 26 years of marriage
The Prince of Monaco met the famous actress in 1955, during a photo session at the Palace scheduled for the Cannes Film Festival. A year later, they married in an event that was described as “the wedding of the century,” due to the media coverage.
The two built a fruitful marriage, which was interrupted after the tragic accident that killed Kelly in 1982. After that, the Prince never wanted to remarry, and according to his son Alberto, he was never the same again.
3. King George VI and Elizabeth, the Queen Mother — 29 years of marriage
Before becoming King George VI, Prince Albert, Duke of York, had twice unsuccessfully proposed to Elizabeth, daughter of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Finally, in 1923, she accepted her proposal, despite having doubts about joining the British crown. The freedom for the Prince to choose a wife outside the royal family was considered a gesture of political modernization.
Both became kings over time, and Isabel would end up acquiring the title of Queen Mother, after the death of her husband in 1952.
4. King Charles XVI and Queen Silvia of Sweden — 47 years married
King Charles met his wife, Silvia, during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, where she was a performer and presenter. The two married on June 19, 1976, which was preceded the night before by a special event, where the band ABBA performed their classic Dancing Queen for the first time, in honor of the future queen of Sweden.
The two formed a marriage that continues to this day and with which they have already had three children and eight grandchildren.
5. Queen Margaret II and Prince Henry of Denmark — 50 years of marriage
The then Princess of Denmark, Margaret, met the French diplomat Henri Laborde de Monpezat in London, who was legation secretary at the French Embassy in the British country. The two married on July 10, 1967, when Henri became Henry, Prince of Denmark.
The parents of Federico and Joaquín, heirs to the throne, both built a 50-year marriage until Enrique's death in February 2018.
