The recent suicide of Verónica Forqué, who battled mental health issues for an extended period, has ignited a conversation about the rampant online harassment and character assassination directed at public figures.
Carlota Corredera, a presenter on Telecinco, has used her platform on 'Sálvame' to shed light on this ongoing issue that continues to claim more victims.
Verónica Forqué's tragic passing has led to questions about the potential impact of the relentless online harassment she endured during her participation in 'Masterchef Celebrity.' Similar instances of harassment have been denounced by other celebrities, including Carlota Corredera, who faced criticism during her hosting of Rocío Carrasco's docuseries on Telecinco.
"It is deeply troubling to me that in this country, simply because we appear on TV or because Verónica Forqué once participated in 'Masterchef,' it appears that we are expected to endure daily public lynchings, insults, and humiliation. I don't know which contract stipulates that if you are a public figure, you must endure public daily harassment, free of charge," expressed the presenter, addressing the threats, insults, and other forms of abuse perpetrated by anonymous individuals hiding behind false profiles on social media.
Carlota Corredera expressed her sadness over the necessity of having to filter keywords on her Instagram and social networks to avoid insults, humiliations, and denigrations, emphasizing the concerning trend that has emerged. "What kind of country are we becoming?" Corredera exclaimed, visibly outraged by the online harassment and character assassination that she, too, has been subjected to.
She concluded by highlighting the need for individuals in the public eye to prioritize their mental health due to the constant stream of atrocious comments they encounter on a daily basis.
Corredera's impassioned speech stands in stark contrast to a recent Twitter controversy that erupted when Lucía Pariente, a former 'Secret Story' contestant, made an unpleasant comment about Cristina Porta, a fellow finalist from the same program. After a barrage of complaints and criticism on social media, Pariente posted and subsequently deleted the remark, in which she insinuated that Porta was frequently seen at footballers' parties, alongside Luca Onestini, a team member, going as far as to label Onestini as a team's prop man.
