Nicole Kidman revealed that her 11-year marriage to Tom Cruise shielded her from experiencing harassment in the Hollywood industry.
She described being the partner of an "extremely powerful man" as a protective factor during that time, while also expressing her thoughts on the Me Too movement.
During her marriage to Cruise, which lasted from 1990 to 2001, Kidman found herself in a position she doesn't often discuss. She believes that discussing her past marriage can be disrespectful to her current husband, musician Keith Urban, who is her great love.
However, Kidman acknowledged the role her marriage played in her life. "That said, I got married very young (to Cruise), but it didn't necessarily grant me power; it offered me protection. I married for love, but being married to an extremely influential man shielded me from experiences of harassment," she explained to New York Magazine.
Reflecting on her career, Kidman shared that she felt like she hadn't fully grown as an individual when she started working at a young age. It was later, around the age of 32 or 33, that she felt she was still evolving.
Kidman also spoke about her encounters with the Me Too movement and the support she has received from other women throughout her career, mentioning figures like Jane Campion and Karyn Kusama, the director of "Destroyer."
Regarding the Me Too movement, she stated, "I've had experiences like this since I was young. Do I want to delve into them in an article? No. Do I incorporate them into my work? Absolutely. I'm open and honest. I want to have a well of experiences and emotions to draw from, and I'm not only referring to harassment."
"I discuss loss, death, and all the facets of life," Kidman added. She concluded by mentioning her upcoming project, a film with Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie about Roger Ailes, the late founder of Fox News who faced allegations of harassment.
