While shooting "Mission: Impossible: Fallout," the most recent chapter in the action-packed franchise, the cast and crew were witnesses to a heart-stopping incident that could have resulted in tragedy for the actor.
As reported by Esquire magazine, members of the production team feared the worst when Cruise had to execute a stunt involving hanging from a rope beneath a helicopter and then descending to retrieve a payload.
In the final edited version of the film, viewers can witness the exact moment when everyone on set believed the actor had plummeted to his demise: Cruise descended from the top of the rope towards the payload. According to Esquire, even co-stars Rebecca Ferguson and Henry Cavill had their hearts in their throats during these sequences.
"I found myself screaming. I genuinely thought he had fallen," exclaimed Ferguson. "There was an audible gasp from everyone present," confirmed Cavill.
Tom Cruise himself acknowledged the immense challenge of these scenes. "You know it's going to be a major shock. It really leaves me breathless. We don't do many takes like that. We keep at it until we get it right, and then it's like, 'please, let's move on,'" he remarked.
This incident isn't the first time Cruise has encountered challenges while filming; he famously broke his ankle while leaping between rooftops in London during a previous production.
