Selena Gomez has issued a resolute response to critics who commented on her physique after her appearance at the 2023 Golden Globes.
Following her red carpet walk at the Golden Globes on January 10, Selena Gomez, aged 30, connected with her sister, Gracie Elliot Teefey, aged 9, on Instagram Live to address the comments she received about her body during the event.
As she shared in a TikTok video, the actress and singer explained, "I'm a little more robust right now because I had fun on vacation," with her sister confirming this by saying, "Yes." The two shared a laugh, reinforcing a message of body positivity.
Selena Gomez, adorned in a Valentino dress, was nominated for her first Golden Globe in the Best Actress in a Comedy category for her role as Mabel Mora in the popular Hulu show "Only Murders in the Building," which features Steve Martin and Martin Short.
This is not the first time the star has confronted body-shaming. She has consistently spoken out against body critics, including a statement she made in April 2022: "I honestly don't care about my weight because people always have something to say anyway." Addressing her critics, she emphasized, "I am perfect just the way I am. The moral of the story? Bye bye."
Selena Gomez is resolute in not allowing anyone else's opinions about her body to affect her. Additionally, she has been open about the significant fluctuations in her weight, often attributed to her medication regimen to manage her lupus diagnosis.
In one of her recent projects, the documentary "My Mind & Me," released on Apple+, Gomez granted access to various aspects of her life, even during challenging moments. The documentary exposed previously unknown facets of her life, revealing her resilience and vulnerability.
During the documentary's premiere, Gomez shared her challenging journey in bringing it to light and opened up about the struggles she experienced over the years it was recorded.
She candidly revealed that she had been to four rehab centers and grappled with emotional ups and downs that could persist for weeks or months without a clear trigger.
Her mental health journey began when she turned 20, with fluctuating states of intense emotions. She initially experienced depression and began isolating herself from others. At times, she was immobilized in bed and cut off from the world. Her friends supported her, but her condition remained a mystery to them.
Gomez emphasized that her struggles were not limited to depression but extended to more intense episodes. Although she never attempted suicide, she frequently contemplated it, believing that life would improve if she were not part of it.
In 2018, she faced a severe episode of psychosis, which ultimately led her to a treatment center. After several months, she received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
One of the most alarming aspects of this condition, as shared in her documentary, was her inability to predict when she would experience a severe episode.
The documentary also delves into Gomez's complex relationship with her father and her widely publicized romance with Justin Bieber.
