Catherine Deneuve, I prefer glamour to love

The French actress Catherine Deneuve has displayed in Madrid that rare skill that is intellectual glamour, stating, at the presentation of a charity gala, that she prefers "glamour to love".

With that ease in reciting phrases that the cleverest stars seem to steal from their best scripts, the muse of directors as diverse as Luis Buñuel, Roman Polanksi, Lars Von Trier and Manoel de Oliveira, offered a brief press conference to support a charity auction of twelve bottles of Moet & Chandon champagne, signed by big stars.

The proceeds will go to the Actor's House Foundation, which offers a dignified retirement to a profession in which "retirement is not determined by age, but by lack of opportunities," acknowledged the protagonist of The Last Metro or Tristana.

"Glamour exists," says the actress

Dressed in a black velvet suit with a bateau neckline and green satin shoes, she conquered those present by speaking Spanish, interspersing some phrases of that Italian that she learned with Marcello Mastroiani and appearing deceptively close.

As if reveling in her own display of glamour, she rejected theories that it is a dying breed, even though the great masters of her discipline, such as Ives Saint Laurent, have disappeared.

"The rules have changed, but glamor exists. Before it consisted of showing and now it consisted of hiding," summarized the actress, "the only thing that happens is that fashion has been taken over by the big companies and we have always known that haute couture never will be profitable."
