In a candid revelation on the podcast "Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard," Jenna Ortega confessed to making unscripted changes to her character during the filming of the Netflix series 'Wednesday.'

Jenna Ortega Reflects on Unconventional Choices During 'Wednesday' Filming

The actress, who plays the titular character, aimed to infuse authenticity into her portrayal, leading her to take unilateral actions to modify certain aspects of the script.

Describing her experience on the set, Ortega acknowledged the challenge of navigating the expectations of a series like 'Wednesday,' emphasizing the importance of steering clear of clichés. She shared, "Everything she does and everything she had to play didn't make any sense for her character. Her being in a love triangle didn't make sense."

Ortega specifically highlighted a scene involving a dress and a line in the script that felt incongruent with her character's authenticity. She explained, "There was a line in the script about this dress she has to wear to the school dance. In the scene she says, 'Oh my God, I love it! I can't believe I said that. I literally hate myself.' I had to tell myself, 'No, no way.'"

Acknowledging that she went beyond conventional professionalism, Ortega admitted to changing lines on set without prior approval. This led to moments of confusion with the script supervisor and subsequent discussions with the writers to explain her creative choices.

Ortega clarified that her actions stemmed from a sense of protectiveness towards her character, expressing discomfort with certain emotional arcs in the show but recognizing their narrative necessity. She revealed that a viral dance scene was initially planned as a flash mob but was altered to better align with Wednesday's character.

As 'Wednesday' secures a second season after becoming one of Netflix's major hits, Ortega's unconventional approach seems to have resonated positively. The series, directed by Tim Burton, is expected to delve into new mysteries involving Wednesday and her Never Again companions. With unresolved plotlines and the potential for character development, the return of the main cast, including Jenna Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Isaac Ordonez, Victor Dorobantu, and George Burcea, is anticipated in the upcoming season.
