Jennifer Lawrence shared a candid account of the humiliating experiences she faced in the early stages of her acting career, shedding light on the mistreatment and body shaming prevalent in Hollywood.
Lawrence spoke at an event organized by Elle magazine in Los Angeles, discussing the challenging environment for women in the industry, especially in the wake of revelations about producer Harvey Weinstein's decades-long harassment.
Recalling a distressing incident from her youth, Lawrence disclosed that producers once insisted she lose 15 pounds (approximately 7 kilos) within two weeks. In a deeply demeaning moment, a female producer directed Lawrence and other women, who were considerably thinner, to recite lines from a script while standing N-. Only areas were covered with duct tape. Following this ordeal, the producer callously suggested using the N- photos as inspiration for Lawrence's diet.
Admitting to accepting mistreatment due to power imbalances, Lawrence reflected on her younger self navigating the delicate balance between staying true to her values and avoiding a reputation as difficult or, as she was labeled, a "nightmare."
Lawrence also addressed the aftermath of exposing body shaming, recounting a producer's offensive comments about her appearance. However, the actress asserted her commitment to standing against abusive behavior, emphasizing that no one should feel compelled to smile in the face of discomfort.
Acknowledging the ongoing struggle for a world where everyone is treated with respect, Lawrence pledged her support to those who feel unable to protect themselves, irrespective of gender. She stressed the importance of lending an ear to anyone facing mistreatment until a more equitable and respectful environment prevails.
Lawrence clarified that while she was not personally harassed or abused by the producer, she condemned his behavior unequivocally. Expressing solidarity with the women who came forward, Lawrence thanked them for their courage in exposing the "disgusting acts" perpetrated by Weinstein.
