Speaking with The New York Times, Theroux described the separation as "probably the biggest — and I'm choosing my words very carefully — it was like the gentlest possible separation in that there was no enmity."
He emphasized that neither of them harbors ill feelings, and it's more of an "amicable divorce." According to Theroux, "neither of us are dead, neither of us are thinking about throwing knives at the other. It's more like an amicable [divorce]. It's boring, but we've respected each other long enough to make it as painless as possible."
Acknowledging the heartbreak associated with the separation, Theroux expressed that it was mainly in the sense that their friendship would undergo a significant transformation, at least on a day-to-day basis. He highlighted that the friendship between Aniston and him is evolving and changing, something they both take pride in.
Despite the emotional challenges, Theroux contextualizes the experience within the acting world, describing it as a "carnivalesque lifestyle" where separations are common. In this context, the divorce with Aniston hasn't caused the seismic shift often witnessed in ordinary couples, where everything can feel like "you have to cut a baby in half." Fortunately, their separation has been a more nuanced and mutually respectful process.
