Madonna's recent Instagram photo signals the end of her longstanding feud with Lady Gaga.
The Queen of Pop had previously criticized Gaga's work as "reductive," particularly in reference to Gaga winning an Oscar for Best Song on February 24.
Choosing the night of Lady Gaga's Oscar victory for "A Star is Born" as the opportune moment, Madonna decided to mend fences and publicly pose with her former rival. This gesture marked a significant shift after years of media-fueled rivalry and attacks.
The reconciliation took place at Madonna's celebration for the 91st Academy Awards in Hollywood, attended by various celebrities, including Javier Bardem. The shared image of the two pop icons at the event conveyed a message of unity, with Madonna expressing her preference for proximity rather than distance.
Notably, Madonna's public criticism stemmed from Lady Gaga's 2011 release "Born This Way," which many critics saw as resembling Madonna's classic "Express Yourself." Madonna went so far as to label Gaga's song as "reductive" in an interview.
During her 2012 MDNA tour, Madonna incorporated snippets of "Born This Way" into her performance of "Express Yourself" and concluded by stating, "She's not me, and she never will be."
Despite these past conflicts, Lady Gaga, in her 2017 documentary "Five Foot Two," expressed continued admiration for Madonna, acknowledging her as one of her greatest influences. Gaga even revealed a desire for a more direct and honest confrontation, stating, "She doesn't look me in the eyes and tell me that I'm reductive.
I just want Madonna to push me against a wall, kiss me, and tell me that I'm a piece of shit." Little did Gaga anticipate that two years later, Madonna would extend congratulations on her Oscar win, signaling a newfound harmony between the two iconic artists.
