McGowan contends that Portman's display of support for women in the film industry is "disingenuous" and alleges that Portman is, in fact, a part of the problem due to her perceived inaction in the face of gender disparities.
McGowan pointedly suggested that Portman's "protest" lacked authenticity and fell short of the courage that some media outlets ascribed to it. She remarked, "I find Portman's brand of activism deeply offensive to those of us who are actively engaged in the cause." In her critique, McGowan also directly accused Portman of having worked with only two directors throughout her extensive career, with one of them being Portman herself. McGowan stated, "Your production company has employed just one director: you. Your actions, Natalie, carry weight in the world, just as your inaction does."
