The Rise and Fall of Steven Seagal, From Action Hero to Hollywood Outcast

Once destined to be the biggest star in action cinema, Steven Seagal's career took a dramatic downturn, leaving his name less recognized among today's younger audience compared to peers like Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Despite initially competing and even triumphing at the box office, Seagal's inability to navigate his fame effectively condemned him to a second-class status in the film industry.

Seagal, already in his thirties when Hollywood embraced him, secured exclusivity with Warner based on his roles in modest yet successful films such as 'Above the Law' (1988), 'Hard to Kill' (1990), 'Marked for Death' (1991), and 'Seeking Justice' (1991).

These films, though relatively inexpensive to produce, garnered astonishing results at the box office, making him a lucrative asset for the industry giant.

The pinnacle of Seagal's action cinema success came with 'Under Siege' (1992), where he portrayed Casey Ryback, the cook of the USS Missouri. The film, costing around 35 million dollars, generated a staggering 156 million dollars, solidifying his position at the top of the genre.

However, Seagal's abrasive personality and difficult working relationships with co-stars, known within the industry, were overshadowed by his financial success. A pivotal moment that marked a shift in public perception occurred in 1991 when he hosted an episode of 'Saturday Night Live,' considered the show's biggest disaster. The fallout from this appearance led to a lifetime ban from the program.

Furthermore, legends circulated about Seagal's boastful behavior during the filming of 'Seeking Justice,' where he claimed that no one could drown him. In an ironic twist, the cast included Gene LeBell, a renowned wrestler and stuntman.

Although unconfirmed, the story goes that LeBell responded to Seagal's challenge by leaving him unconscious, and there are claims of an alleged incident involving Seagal losing control of his sphincter. While not explicitly confirmed, LeBell hinted at the incident, emphasizing Seagal's tendency to "mess with the wrong people."

Seagal's career, once at its peak, became marred by controversies and personal conflicts, overshadowing his cinematic accomplishments and relegating him to a status far from the action hero he was once destined to be.
