The story behind Jennifer Lopez's legendary green dress

Jennifer Lopez just won the Fashion Icon award at the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) event, but her career in fashion began several years ago at the 2000 Grammys. The singer walked the red carpet with her partner at the moment, Puff Daddy, with a printed dress in green and blue tones by Versace with a dizzying V-neckline down to below the navel. The dress, which highlighted her as a fashion icon, launched a million image searches on Google. A garment that made history.

During the event, the actress took the stage alongside actor David Duchovny to present an award. "This is the first time in five or six years that I'm sure no one is looking at me," commented the actor, generating a standing ovation from the audience. Without a doubt, the dress caused a sensation from the first moment. But Jennifer Lopez was not the one who debuted the controversial garment, it was a repeated look. The model, Amber Valletta, used it in Milan at the Versace show for the spring 2000 collection. In addition, Donatella Versace had already worn it for the first time on a red carpet at the MET Gala in 1999 and Geri Halliwell had also worn it , by the Spice Girls, at an awards ceremony in France in the early 2000s. But no one wore it like Jennifer Lopez.

Jennifer revealed in her new series Moments of Fashion that she almost didn't wear the tropical print dress because her stylist, Andrea Lieberman, said she had already worn it in public three times. At the time, the actress was filming the movie The Wedding Planner and she didn't have enough time to prepare for the occasion, so they went with the green piece anyway.

"Usually in my fittings there are many dresses to choose from, but that day we had very little time and there were only two: one white and the other was the Versace jungle print dress," Lopez explained, adding: "I put on the green dress and I walked out and Benny (Lopez's manager) says, 'That's it. That's it. Don't even talk about it. That's the dress.'"

What few know is that this piece also has the merit of having created Google Image Search. "At the time, it was the most popular search query we'd ever seen. But we had no way to get users exactly what they wanted: JLo in that dress," Google CEO Eric Schmidt said in 2015. And so, Some time later, Google Image Search was born. When asked if she wanted to be compensated for her role, JLo replied: "Just a small part of it... a truck full of money."

Currently, the original dress is kept in the singer's closet and she declared that she would wear it again. But it can be found for sale for $7,250 dollars.
