At the age of 58, Cruise has been bestowed with the certificate of Honorary Naval Aviator by the United States Army, a distinction also granted to Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The prestigious recognition was conferred upon them at a ceremony held at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles. While Cruise accepted the award through a video call, Bruckheimer was present to receive the esteemed honor.

The Naval Air Forces highlighted the historical significance of the film 'Top Gun,' stating that in the history of motion pictures, no aviation film is more iconic. The 1986 Paramount Pictures film, with its unforgettable characters, dialogue, and images, has left an indelible mark on the minds of a generation of Americans.

It not only captured the hearts of millions but also had a profound positive impact on recruiting for Naval Aviation. The film, which brought aircraft carriers and naval aircraft into popular culture, significantly promoted and supported Naval Aviation.

The plot follows the adventures of Maverick at the elite aviation school at the Miramar base in San Diego, California. Decades later, Cruise and Bruckheimer returned to the franchise for the sequel 'Top Gun: Maverick,' scheduled for release in 2021.

The Naval Air Forces commended Cruise and Bruckheimer for ensuring that the franchise remains true to the unparalleled tactical excellence of the Navy Fighter Weapons School, reflecting the spirit of Naval Aviation and the fighting spirit of the men and women in the world's best-armed forces.

Both Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer, known for their contributions to the film industry, will now have the honor of wearing the Navy's golden wings, along with other privileges granted to naval pilots. This prestigious award has been previously bestowed upon notable personalities like comedian Bob Hope in 1986, recognizing his extensive tours for the United Service Organizations and entertaining U.S. military personnel worldwide.
