Henry of England and Meghan Markle Unveil Archewell, Their New Charitable Foundation

Despite stepping back from their royal duties, the couple is committed to continuing their philanthropic efforts. The announcement of their foundation was initially delayed due to the global coronavirus crisis, but the couple has now revealed key details, including the name and inspiration behind their new venture.

Named "Archewell," the foundation draws inspiration from the Greek term "arché," signifying the source of action and the driving force of the universe. Interestingly, the same term served as inspiration for the name of their 11-month-old son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. The couple expressed their eagerness to create something meaningful, emphasizing their intent to establish a volunteer service and share educational materials through various mediums such as audiovisual content, podcasts, and books.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex explained the choice of the name Archewell, describing it as a combination of an ancient word for strength and action (arché) and another evoking deep resources (well) that each person possesses. While their primary plan is to launch the foundation in the near future, the current global pandemic has caused a temporary delay, with the couple acknowledging that the launch will happen "when the time is right."

Amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the couple remains committed to supporting efforts to combat the global crisis. They felt compelled to share the news of their foundation, despite the unfavorable timing, as they consider it essential to their ongoing narrative.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex disclosed that the concept of Archewell predates their previous foundation, SussexRoyal, and was conceived as an idea linked to the charity organization they envisioned building. The connection with their son's name indicates that this idea has been in development for at least a year, dating back to the birth of Archie in May 2019.

Now settled in Los Angeles, California, after a brief stint in Canada, the couple is navigating their independent life. Markle, in particular, is exploring opportunities in the acting industry. Elizabeth St. Laurent, who has a background in philanthropy and previously worked alongside Melinda Gates, has been enlisted to lead their foundation. This exclusive advance leak, unusual for former members of the British royal family, signals their commitment to shaping their philanthropic legacy under the banner of Archewell.
