Margot Robbie has stated in an interview that Disney has canceled a spin-off of the Pirates of the Caribbean saga "led by women."

Margot Robbie reveals that Disney scrapped her 'Pirates of the Caribbean' project

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, a long time ago, to have more of a female-led story, not entirely female-led, but just a different type of story, which we thought would have been really cool. But I guess they don't want to do it,” Robbie told Vanity Fair.

It was in June 2020 - in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic - when it was announced that Margot Robbie would be the protagonist of a new installment of Pirates of the Caribbean, which was going to follow the adventures of a female character with a totally different plot from the original film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter magazine, this project by Disney and Robbie had nothing to do with the announced new version of Pirates of the Caribbean that Craig Mazin, the creator of the acclaimed miniseries Chernobyl, is working on.

Specifically, in the film that Robbie was going to star in, the character of Jack Sparrow, popularized by Johnny Depp, was not going to appear and would introduce new references into this film universe. The character of Sparrow was the subject of comings and goings after the producer of the last episode of the saga, Jerry Bruckheimer, revealed that during filming Depp had had to deal with his problems with alcohol, to which he added, for then, the alleged attacks against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

However, after it was confirmed in 2018 that the actor would not have a sixth chance to play his character, it later emerged that that decision could be reviewed. Something that has not happened until now.

With a total of five films, Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most lucrative film franchises, which has grossed more than $4 billion worldwide and has stars such as Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem.

CEO Bob Chapek spoke to Disney executives last week about impending cost cuts, including layoffs, a hiring freeze and a review of spending on content and marketing.

The Australian star, who was recently a tourist in Buenos Aires and Patagonia, and her entourage was involved in a s--ndal with a paparazzi in La Boca, will be seen in December alongside Brad Pitt in Babylon, by Damien Chazelle (the director of La La Land and Whiplash).

And next year we will see her starring in Barbie. Further? She is in pre-production on a prequel to Ocean's Eleven, with herself in the role of producer and also taking on the lead role.

Robbie obtained Oscar nominations for I Am Tonya (as a leading actress) in 2018, and for Bombshell, as an actress in a supporting role, in 2020. Other films in which she has excelled are The Wolf of Wall Street , by Martin Scorsese, and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, in which he was part of the cast that included Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, directed by Quentin Tarantino.
