In the midst of various legal proceedings, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex find themselves embroiled in legal battles.
Prince Harry is currently suing a publishing group in London, alleging wiretapping and other privacy violations in a class action lawsuit filed alongside other celebrities. Simultaneously, Meghan Markle has secured a legal triumph by winning a court battle against her sister Samantha, resulting in the dismissal of the lawsuit filed by Samantha.
Samantha had accused the Duchess of spreading "patently false and malicious lies" during her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, where Meghan referred to herself as an "only child" to a "global audience." The lawsuit further claimed that Meghan orchestrated a campaign to defame and destroy Samantha's reputation, subjecting her to "humiliation, shame, and hatred on a global scale." Samantha also alleged that the book "Finding Freedom," associated with the royal couple, contained "false statements" about her.
Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell of Florida dismissed the lawsuit, stating that Meghan expressed an opinion about her childhood and relationship with her half-sister. The judge emphasized that Meghan's statement about her own childhood was not objectively verifiable nor subject to empirical evidence. Samantha could not plausibly refute Meghan's view of her own childhood. The claims related to the book were also dismissed as Samantha failed to prove Meghan's involvement in its content.
Meghan's legal victory adds to her recent professional success, winning the Gracie Award for her podcast "Archetypes." The award recognizes exemplary programming created by, for, and about women in all facets of media and entertainment.
In expressing her gratitude, Meghan acknowledged the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation, stating, "This is a shared success for me and the team behind Archetypes, most of whom are women, and the inspiring guests who join me each week."
